If the current flowing through a Cu wire of 1 mm diameter is 1.1 A. The drift velocity of electrons is:

    A)  0.1 mm/s

    B)  0.2mm/s

    C)  0.3 mm/s

    D)  0.5 mm/s

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

                                    Drift velocity is the average velocity that a particle, such as an electron attains due to an electric field. It is given by \[{{v}_{d}}=\frac{I}{neA}\] where\[I\]is current, n the number of electrons per unit volume, e the charge and A the area. For copper atomic mass is 63, density 9 g/ \[c{{m}^{3}}\]                 \[n=\frac{9}{63}\times {{N}_{A}}\] where\[{{N}_{A}}\]is Avogadros number. Given,\[I=1.1\text{ }A,\text{ }r=0.5\times {{10}^{-1}}cm\] \[\therefore \]\[{{v}_{d}}=\frac{1.1\times 63\times 100}{9\times 6\times {{10}^{23}}\times 1.6\times {{10}^{-19}}\times 3.14}\] \[\times 0.5\times 0.5\] \[\Rightarrow \]               \[{{v}_{d}}=0.0102cm/s=0.1\,mm/s\]
