Radiowaves of wavelength X are sent from a radar towards an aeroplane. The aeroplane is approaching towards the radar station. The wavelength of the radiowaves received after reflection from the aeroplane will be :

    A) \[\lambda \]

    B)  more than\[\lambda \]

    C)  less than \[\lambda \]

    D)  depends on speed of aeroplane

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Dopplers effect gives the apparent change in the frequency of the soruce due to a relative motion between the source and observer. The perceived frequency is given by \[f=f\left( \frac{v\pm {{v}_{o}}}{v\pm {{v}_{s}}} \right)\]where\[{{v}_{o}}\]is speed of observer and v, speed of source. In the given case since, source is stationary (radar station),\[{{v}_{s}}=0,\]hence, frequency increases, therefore, wavelength decreases.\[(f\lambda =c)\].
