Identify the correct statements regarding the nuclei of vorticella :
    (i)   Both macro and micro nuclei are diploid
(ii)  Macro nucleus is diploid and micro nucleus is haploid
(iii) The male and female pro-nucleus are haploid
    (iv) Both pronuclei are diploid
    (v)  Zygote is diploid

    A)  i, ii, iii

    B)  ii, iii, v

    C)  i, iv, v

    D)  i, iii, v

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Body cytoplasm of Vorticella is differentiated into outer clear ectoplasm and inner granular endoplasm. The endoplasm contains a large, elongated, rod-like and horse-shoe shaped macronuclus and tiny Micronuceuls occur in close association with the macronucleus. Male pronucleus formed in micro conjugant whereas female pronucleus in macro conjugant by nuclear division. In both cases first division is reducrional therefore the pronucleus are haploid. Later the male pronucleus migrates into cytoplasm of macro conjugant and fuse with female pronucleus to form diploid zygote nucleus or synkaryon.
