Assertion (A): Restriction endonucleases are also called molecular scissors. Reason (R): When fragments generated by restriction endonucleases are mixed, they join together due to their sticky ends.

    A) (A) and (R) are true, (R) is the correct explanation for

    B) (A) and (R) are true but (R) is not the correct explanation for

    C) (A) is true but (R) is false

    D) (A) is false but (R) is true

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Restriction endonuclease are molecular scissors which cut a DNA molecule within certain specific site called restriction site. Common restriction endonucleases are EcoRI, Barn II, Hind III etc. When the DNA fragments are mixed they joint to each other due to free 5 phosphate group and 3 OH group. To prevent their joining the phosphate group is removed from 5 end of DNA segments.
