Two dry fruits (A and B) were observed. Both developed from uni-Iocular ovaries of monocarpellary gynoecia. In fruit, A pericarp and seed coat are free. It liberated the seeds only after the disintegration of the pericarp. Fruit B dehisced dorsiventrally librating the           seeds. In the following the former in the pair represents A and latter B To which types of fruits. A and B respectively belong?

    A)  Achene and legume

    B)  Nut and follicle

    C)  Cypsela and siliqua

    D)  Pyxidium and septicidal capsule

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Achene  develops   from  monocarpellary unilocular ovary but the fruit wall (pericarp) is nor fused with seed coat. e.g., rose, Mirabilis, Clematis. Legume developed from monocarpellary, unilocular superior ovary with marginal placentation. e.g., family Leguminosae. Nut is one seeded fruit develops from a superior, bi or poly carpellary ovary having a hard pericarp free from seed coat. .e.g., betalnut, chashewnut, water chestnut.          Follicle is very much similar to legume but on ripening it opens generally along the ventral suture, e.g., Calotropis, Larkspur. Cypsela is one seeded fruit develops from bicarpeliary inferior ovary. Here the pericarp is free from seed-coat but the thalamus is fused with pericarp. Clique is developed from bicarpeliary syncarpous and superior ovary which bears ovule on two parietal placenta. It dehisces from the base towards the apex by both suture, e.g., Brassica.  Capsule is developed from multicarpellary syncarpous ovary. In sepericidal capsule dehiscence occurs by septa, e.g., Linseed.
