Which one of the following reagents is used for detection of unsaturation in alkenes?

    A)  \[NaOH+CaO\]

    B)  Cold dilute alkaline \[KMn{{O}_{4}}\]

    C)  \[C{{l}_{2}}/hv\]

    D)  \[KOH/{{C}_{2}}{{H}_{5}}OH\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Unsaturation in alkene or alkyne or in any organic compound is detected by reacting the organic compound with alkaline \[\text{KMn}{{\text{O}}_{4}}\] (Baeyers reagent) or bromine water. Both bromine water or alkaline \[\text{KMn}{{\text{O}}_{4}}\]are decolourised after the reaction with unsaturated compound. \[2KMn{{O}_{4}}+2KOH\xrightarrow{{}}2{{K}_{2}}Mn{{O}_{4}}+{{H}_{2}}O+[O]\] \[\underset{C{{H}_{2}}}{\overset{C{{H}_{2}}}{\mathop{||}}}\,\underbrace{{{H}_{2}}O+[O]}_{\text{Alkaline}\,\text{KMn}{{\text{O}}_{\text{4}}}}\xrightarrow{{}}\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  \text{Ethylene}\,\,\text{glcol} \\  \,\,\text{colourless} \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{\underset{C{{H}_{2}}OH}{\overset{C{{H}_{2}}OH}{\mathop{|}}}\,}}\,\]
