The thermo emf produced in a thermocouple is \[3\text{ }\mu \,V/{}^\circ C\]. If the temperature of the cold junction is \[20{}^\circ C\] and the thermo emf is 0.3 mV, the temperature of the hot junction is:

    A) \[80{}^\circ C\]

    B) \[100{}^\circ C\]

    C) \[120{}^\circ C\]

    D) \[140{}^\circ C\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

                     Given: Thermo emf produced in thrmocouple\[{{e}_{1}}=3\mu V/{{\,}^{o}}C\] Temperature of cold junction \[{{T}_{1}}=20{{\,}^{o}}C\] \[{{e}_{2}}=0.3\,m\,volt=0.3\times {{10}^{-3}}\] \[=300\times {{10}^{-6}}\,volt\] \[=300\mu \,\text{volt}\] \[{{e}_{1}}=3\mu \,\text{volt/}{{\,}^{o}}\text{C}\]for \[1{{\,}^{o}}C\] \[{{e}_{1}}=300\mu \,\text{volt}\] So,          \[{{T}_{2}}=100{{\,}^{o}}C\] Effective temperature is given by \[={{T}_{2}}+{{T}_{1}}\] \[=100+20=120{{\,}^{o}}C\]
