A population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium for a gene with only two alleles. If the gene frequency of an allele A is 0.7, genotype frequency of Aa is:

    A)  0.21

    B)  0.42

    C)  0.36

    D)  0.7

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

According to Hardy- Weinberg law At equilibrium genetic and allelic frequencies remain constant from one generation to next generation. It can be mathematically expressed as for allelic frequency \[A+\text{ }a=\text{ }1\] For genetic frequency \[{{A}^{2}}+\text{ }{{a}^{2}}+\text{ }2Aa=\text{ }1\] So allelic frequency of \[A\text{ }=\text{ }0.7\] So allefic frequency of \[a\text{ }=\text{ }1\text{ }-\text{ }0.7\text{ }=\text{ }0.3\] Therefore, the genetic frequency of Aa is \[=\text{ }2(Aa)\] \[=2(0.7\times 0.3)\] \[=2\times 0.21=0.42\] So, frequency of \[Aa=0.42.\]
