The number of Ti-bonds in the product formed by passing acetylene through dil. \[{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}\text{S}{{\text{O}}_{\text{4}}}\] containing mercuric sulphate is :

    A)  zero

    B)  one

    C)  two

    D)  three

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

When acetylene passed through dil. \[{{\text{H}}_{\text{2}}}\text{S}{{\text{O}}_{\text{4}}}\] in presence of \[\text{H}{{\text{g}}^{\text{2+}}}\]or mercuric sulphate, acetaldehyde is obtained as : \[{{\text{C}}_{2}}{{H}_{2}}+{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow{Dil\,{{H}_{2}}S{{O}_{4}}/Hgs{{O}_{4}}}\underset{\text{acetaldehyde}}{\mathop{C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{O}{\mathop{\overset{|\,|}{\mathop{C}}\,}}\,-H}}\,\] The structure of acetaldehyde is\[H-\underset{H}{\overset{H}{\mathop{\underset{|}{\overset{|}{\mathop{C}}}\,}}}\,-\overset{O}{\mathop{\overset{\pi |\,|\sigma }{\mathop{C}}\,}}\,-H\] In a double bond one a and one n bond is present. So, acetaldehyde contains one \[\pi \] bond.
