  • question_answer
The height from the earth surface at which the value of acceleration due to gravity reduces to 1/4th of its value at earths surface (assume earth to be sphere of radius 6400 km)

    A)  6400 km

    B)  2400 km

    C)  2946 km

    D)  1600 km

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

     The acceleration due to gravity at the heigh th \[g=g\frac{g}{{{\left( 1+\frac{h}{{{R}_{e}}} \right)}^{2}}}\] According to the question \[g=\frac{g}{4}\] \[\therefore \] \[\frac{g}{4}=\frac{g}{{{\left( 1+\frac{h}{{{R}_{e}}} \right)}^{2}}}\] \[{{\left( 1+\frac{h}{{{R}_{e}}} \right)}^{2}}=4\] \[1+\frac{h}{{{R}_{e}}}=2\Rightarrow \frac{h}{{{R}_{e}}}=1\] \[h={{R}_{e}}=6400\,km\]
