. Decrease in the calcium level in blood is  caused by

    A)  prolactin

    B)  calcitonin

    C)  adrenocorticotropin

    D)  oxytocin

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Calcitonin in vertebrates, lowers the concentration of calcium (and phosphate) in  the body by supressing the release of calcium  from bone and promoting excretion of  calcium and phosphate by the kidneys. Main function of prolactin in mammals is to activate growth of breasts during pregnancy and secretion of milk by mammary glands after child birth. Adrenocorticotropic hormone is secreted by cortical cells of anterior pituitary. Hyposecretion of ACTH leads to rheumatic arthritis. Oxytocin stimulates contraction of uterine muscles, including labour pain for child birth.
