One gene-one enzyme hypothesis wa propounded by

    A)  Beadle and Tatum

    B)  Louis Pasteur

    C)  J B S Haldane

    D)  None of the above

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

G W Beadle and E L Tatum in 1948, proposed one gene-one enzyme hypothesis which  states that a gene controls metabolic machinery of the organisms through synthesis of an enzyme. This laid the foundation of biochemical genetics. Beadle and Tatum were awarded Nobel Prize in 1958. Louis Pasteur, a French scientist who I known as Father of Immunology and credited with the Germ theory of disease disproved the theory of spontaneous generation by performing a well designed experiment (swan-necked flask experiment). J B S Haldane (1892-1994) was a biologist, biochemist and geneticist. He migrated to India in 1957 and settled in Bhubaneshwar, Orissa. He independently proposed the idea about the origin of life.
