Nitrification is the process of conversion of

    A)  \[N{{H}_{3}}\]

    B)  \[N{{O}_{2}}\]

    C)  \[N{{O}_{3}}\]

    D)  All of these

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Some of \[N{{H}_{3}}\] is oxidized to form nitrites \[(N{{O}_{2}})\] and nitrates \[(N{{O}_{3}})\] through the action autotrophic bacteria, eg, Nitrosomonas and  Nitrobacter. This process is called nitrification and the energy released supports the existence of nitrifying bacteria. The organic nitrogen of plants and animals ultimately broken down by the action. saprophytic fungi and bacteria to ammonification \[(N{{H}_{3}})\] in a process called ammonification. Other types of anaerobic soil bacteria (e.g) Pseudomonas) act on nitrate in the process of denitrification by which \[{{N}_{3}}\] is liberated into  the atmosphere. It involves the reduction of  nitrate ions \[(NO_{3}^{-})\] to nitrogen dioxide \[({{N}_{2}}O)\], nitrogen monoxide (NO) or nitrogen \[({{N}_{2}})\].
