    Malleus is the outermost, hammer ossicle and is attached to the inner surface of membrane.  The middle ear ossicle i.e., incus is the anvil and attached to stapes by a ball and socket joint. Stapes is the inner most ossicle, articulates with malleus by a synovial joint.
