Which of the following is not hydrolysed?

    A)  \[AsC{{l}_{3}}\]

    B)  \[P{{F}_{3}}\]

    C)  \[SbC{{l}_{3}}\]

    D)  \[N{{F}_{3}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Key Idea: During hydrolysis water forms coordinate bonds with vacant orbitals of central atom. It means central atom must have vacant orbitals. (i) \[P{{F}_{3}}\] has vacant 3d orbitals of P, \[As{{H}_{3}}\] has vacant 4d orbitals of As, \[Sb{{H}_{3}}\] has vacant Sd orbitals of Sb. So all these compounds are hydrolysed. (ii) In \[N{{F}_{3}}\], N does not have vacant d orbitals because it is member of second period. So \[N{{F}_{3}}\] cannot be hydrolysed.
