For an electron, if the uncertainty in velocity is Av, the uncertainty in its position \[\Delta v\], the uncertainty in its position \[(\Delta x)\] is given by :

    A)  \[\frac{hm}{4\pi \Delta v}\]

    B)  \[\frac{4\pi }{hm\Delta v}\]

    C)  \[\frac{h}{4\pi m\Delta v}\]

    D)  \[\frac{h\pi m}{h\Delta v}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

    According to Heisenbergs uncertainty principle \[\Delta x\,\,\Delta p\ge \frac{h}{4\pi }\] But \[\Delta p\] (momentum) \[=m\Delta v\] Or \[\Delta x\,\,m\,\,\Delta v\ge \frac{h}{4\pi }\] \[\Delta x=\frac{h}{4\pi \,m\,\Delta \,v}\]
