    Ethylene is used for :

    A)  decrease the senescence

    B)  increase the height of stem

    C)  ripening of fruits

    D)  prevention of leaf fall

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Ethylene \[(C{{H}_{2}}=C{{H}_{2}})\] is a naturally occurring gaseous plant hormone which induces fruit ripening of climacteric fruits. Climacteric fruits are fleshy fruits which show a sudden sharp rise of respiration rate at the time of ripening. Cytokinins delay the senescence of leaves and other organs (Richmond-Lang Effect). Gibberellins specifically induce in ternodal growth in some genetically dwarf varieties of plants like pea and maize. They also cause elongation of reduced stem or bolting in case of rosette plants (e.g.. Henbane, Cabbage).
