Which of the following mineral deficiency will cause death of stem and root tips?

    A)  Mo

    B)  Ca

    C)  S

    D)  Fe

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Calcium involved in selective permeability of cell membranes. It activates certain enzymes required for development of stem and root apex and as calcium pectate in the middle lamella of cell wall. The deficiency of calcium  causes stunted growth, degeneration of meristems. especially root apex, chlorosis, necrosis and curling. Fe is a constituent of cytochromes, terredoxin, nitrogenase, acrivator of catalase and some other enzymes. Its deficiency causes interveinal chlorosis, appearing first in young leaves, veins, growth reduced. Mo is a constituent of nitrogenase, nitrate reductase and activator of dehydrogenase. Its deficiency causes mottled chlorosis with marginal necrosis, and infolding lamina or upper half of lamina falls down etc. Sulphur play important role in chlorophyll formation, growth, metabolism and nodule formation in legume.
