Hybrid vigour is due to :

    A)  heterosis

    B)  epistasis

    C)  complementary genes

    D)  supplementary genes

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The superiority of hybrid over either of its parent in one or more trait is called hybrid vigour or heterosis. Heterosis obtained by crossing is called balanced heterosis while that obtained by mutations is called mutational heterosis. Complementary genes are two pairs of non- allelic dominant genes which Interact to produce only one phenotypic trait but neither of them produces the trait in the absence of other. Supplementary genes are two independent dominant gene pairs, which interact in such a way that one dominant gene produces its effect irrespective of the presence or absence of other. Epistasis is the interaction between non-allelic genes in which one gene masks inhibits or suppresses the expression of other. The gene that suppresses the other is called epistatic gene while the masked gene is called hypostatic.
