  • question_answer
R.Q. (Respiratory Quotient) is defined as :

    A)  volume of \[C{{O}_{2}}\] evolved = volume of \[{{O}_{2}}\] consumed

    B)  \[\frac{\text{Volume}\,\text{of}\,{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\,\text{consumed}}{\text{Volume}\,\text{of}\,\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\,\text{evolved}}\]

    C)  \[\frac{\text{Volume}\,\text{of}\,\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\,\text{evolved}}{\text{Volume}\,\text{of}\,{{\text{C}}_{\text{2}}}\,\text{consumed}}\]

    D)  \[\frac{\text{Volume}\,\text{of}\,{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\,\text{evolved}}{\text{Volume}\,\text{of}\,\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\,\text{consumed}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Respiratory quotient (R.Q.) is the ratio of volume of \[C{{O}_{2}}\] released and volume of \[{{O}_{2}}\]aken up. \[\text{R}\text{.}\,\text{Q}\text{.=}\frac{\text{Volume}\,\text{of}\,\text{C}{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\,\text{evolved}}{\text{Volume}\,\text{of}\,{{\text{O}}_{\text{2}}}\,\text{consumed}}\] R.Q. is equal to unity if carbohydrates are respiratory substrate. The R.Q. of the seeds which contain fat and oil is less than one (i.e., about 0.7). R.Q. will be more than unity when the respiratory substrate are organic acids (like oxalic acid, malic acid).
