The half-life of radium is 1600 yr. The fraction of a sample of radium that would remain after 6400 yr is :

    A)  1/4

    B)  1/2

    C)  1/8

    D)  1/16

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

     The sample left after n half-lives is \[N={{N}_{0}}{{\left( \frac{1}{2} \right)}^{n}}\] where \[{{N}_{0}}\] is original amount of sample. \[\therefore \] \[\frac{N}{{{N}_{0}}}={{\left( \frac{1}{2} \right)}^{n}}\] where \[n=\frac{6400}{1600}=4\] \[\therefore \] \[\frac{N}{{{N}_{0}}}={{\left( \frac{1}{2} \right)}^{4}}=\frac{1}{16}\]
