Interferons are produced in response to :

    A)  virus

    B)  bacteria

    C)  helminthes

    D)  malarial parasites

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Interferons are glycoproteins synthesized by the virus infected animal cell to prevent further infection. These were discovered by Issacs and Lindmann in 1957. These compounds prevent the association of viral m-RNA with ribosomes of host cell. Interferons are not viral specific but species specific. The chemicals which are used against the bacteria are called antibiotics. These are of microbial origin. The antibiotics prevent the replication, transcription or translation of the bacteria.
