Which of the following is a pollutant from automobiles?

    A)  CO

    B)  \[C{{O}_{2}}\]

    C)  \[S{{O}_{2}}\]

    D)  \[N{{O}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Automobiles are chief source of carbon mono oxide in common busy routes. Co comprises of 80% of all automobile emissions. Carbon monoxide is very harmful to those persons exposed to congested high ways. It causes difficulty in breathing, headache and irritation of mucous membranes. It combines with haemoglobin of blood, reducing its \[{{O}_{2}}\]  carrying capacity by forming carboxyhaemoglobin. In normal concentration \[C{{O}_{2}}\] is not a pollutant but when present in high concentration it causes global warming. The major source of \[S{{O}_{2}}\] emission are burning of fossil fuels. It causes intense irritation of eye and respiratory tract and causes damage to plants by forming necrotic areas on leaf. \[N{{O}_{2}}\] is chief constituent of photochemical smog. It causes irritation of alveoli leading to symptoms resembling emphysema and leaf injury in plants.
