The stem of Equisetum is rough due to :

    A)  spines

    B)  silica

    C)  sclerids

    D)  fibres

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The plant body of Equisetum represents the sporophyte generation and is differentiated into roots, stem and leaves. The main stem is an extensively branched sympodial dark brown or brown rhizome that gives off branches from its nodes. The aerial branches are green, rough and abrassive due to deposite of silica. Sclerids are usually scattered singly or in groups in the plant body especially in phloem, fruit walls and in the pulp of fruits and seeds. The leaves are wholy (Opunria) or partially (Argemofie) modified and form the spine These are meant for defence.
