Food is translocated in plants through :

    A)  xylem

    B)  phloem

    C)  cambium

    D)  cork

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Transfer of organic food (photosynthate) in the form of sucrose from supply end to consumption end is known as translocation. Translocation of food occurs through phloem (actually through the sieve tubes). Xylem forms the bulk of roots and stems of vascular plants. It has two main functions the conduction of water and minerals (through vessels) (ii) provides support to the plant. Cork cambium lies in the cortical region of stem. It cuts off new cells on both sides i.e., cork (phellem) on the outer side and secondary cortex (phelloderm) on the inner side Cambium is present in between the xylem and phloem and between the steles, therefore, called in trafascicular and interfascicular cambium respectively.
