Automobile exhaust causes respiratory problems because of the presence of:

    A)  CO

    B)  \[C{{H}_{4}}\]

    C)  chlorine

    D)  \[N{{O}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Automobile exhausts are a source of considerable air pollution. In the major metropolitan cities vehicular exhausts account for 70% of all CO, 50% of all hydrocarbons, 30-40% of alloxides and 30% of all SPM. CO causes difficulty in breathing, causes headache and irritation of mucous membrane. It combines with haemoglobin of blood and reducing its oxygen carrying capacity. \[N{{O}_{2}}\] gas is the chief constituent of photochemical smog in metropolitan area. \[N{{O}_{2}}\] causes irritation of alveoli leading to symptoms resembling emphysema (inflammation) upon prolonged exposure. Methane \[(C{{H}_{4}})\] is produced when organic matter decays under anaerobic conditions. Huge quantity of methane is produced in agricultural fields. About 15% of global warming is attributed to methane.
