Mendelian recombinations are due to :

    A)  linkage

    B)  independent assortment of genes

    C)  mutation

    D)  dominant characters

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Law of independent assortment states that the alleles (two factors) of the two character assort and separate independentely of each other at the time of gamete formation and get randomly rearranged in the offspring. Bateson and Punnett during their experiments got some result which could not be explained by the law of independent assortment. Such type of genes which present on same chromosome are called linked genes and this phenomenon as linkage. Sudden and heritable changes in gene or chromosomes are called mutation. These are discovered after Mendel.
