    A)  Both the steps [A] and [B] can be called nitrification.

    : It is not necessary for nitrogen fixing bacteria to be photoautotrophic. They can be saprotrophic (e.g. Clostridium) or chemotrophic (e.g., Desulphovibrio) too.
