A man walks for 1 min at a speed of 1 m/s and then run for 1 min at 3 m/s along a straight track. What is the average speed of the man?

    A)  2 m/s

    B)  4 m/s

    C)  3 m/s

    D)  1 m/s

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

                                                                  The average speed of the man is given by \[\text{ }\!\!\upsilon\!\!\text{  }\!\!\!\!\text{ =}\frac{\text{Total}\,\text{distance}}{\text{Total}\,\text{time}}\] or,   \[\upsilon =\frac{{{\upsilon }_{1}}{{t}_{1}}+{{\upsilon }_{2}}{{t}_{2}}}{{{t}_{1}}+{{t}_{2}}}\] or  \[\upsilon =\frac{1\times 60+3\times 60}{60+60}\] \[=\frac{60+180}{120}\] Hence,  \[\upsilon =2m/s\]
