A cylinder of 5 L capacity, filled with air at NTP, is connected with another evacuated cylinder of 30 L capacity. The resultant air pressure in both the cylinders will be:

    A)  10.8 cm of Hg

    B)  14.9 cm of Hg

    C)  21.8 cm of Hg

    D)  38.8 cm of Hg

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

                     Key Idea: Boyle's law\[({{P}_{1}}{{V}_{1}}={{P}_{2}}{{V}_{2}})\]is used to solve this problem. Given,\[{{P}_{1}}~=76\text{ }cm\]of Hg (initial P at NTP) \[{{P}_{2}}~=?\] \[{{V}_{1}}=5L,{{V}_{2}}=30+5=35L\] \[{{P}_{1}}{{P}_{1}}={{P}_{2}}{{V}_{2}}\] \[76\times 5={{P}_{2}}\times 35\] or   \[{{P}_{2}}=\frac{76\times 5}{35}=10.8\,cm\]of Hg
