Which of the following reduces transpiration by inducing closure of stomata ?

    A)                  ABA

    B)  Ethylene

    C)                  Cytokinin

    D)   Gibberellin

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Abscissic acid or ABA is stress hormone. ABA is an inhibitor which counteracts the influence of growth promoting hormones like gibberellins. These induces dormancy and helps to overcome conditions of stress like drought. ABA reduces transpiration by inducing closure of stomata during adverse condition. Cytokinins are plant hormones which promotes cell division like zeatin, kinetin. Gibberellin is plant hormones obtained from fungus Gibberella fujikuroi. It promotes growth and induces bolting i.e., it elongates stem of rosette plants. Ethylene is a gaseous plant hormone which helps in fruit ripening.
