Exchange of substances between individual cells and their environments taken place by :

    A)                  osmosis

    B)  active transport

    C)                  diffusion

    D)  all of these

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Exchange of substances between individual cells and their environments takes place by : Diffusion is process of movement of molecules or ions of liquids, gases and solids from regions of higher concentration to lower concentration due to their random-motion until they are evenly distributed throughout the available space. Osmosis is a special type of diffusion that occurs in a liquid medium through a semipermeable membrane. In this process the movement of molecules of a solvent (C or water) from the region of higher concentration of water to the region of lower concentration (t.e., stronger solution) takes place till the concentration on both sides are equalised. Active transport occurs against concentration, chemical potential or electrochemical potential gradient. Metabolic energy is utilised for transport of substances e.g., \[N{{a}^{+}},{{K}^{+}}\] pump.
