Guttation is direct evidence for the presence of:

    A)  transpiration

    B)  absorption

    C)   root pressure

    D)  ascent of sap

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Guttation is direct evidence for the presence of root pressure. Guttation is the process of exudation of water in form of drops from the edges of leaves through hydathodes. It takes place when absorption of water exceeds that of transpiration. Transpiration is the loss of water in the form of vapours from the aerial parts of plant. About 98% of water absorbed by plant transpired by stomata. Ascent of sap is the upward transport of water alongwith dissolved minerals from roots to the aerial parts of plant. It takes place through xylem.
