Sugarcane is propagated vegetatively because :

    A)  it does not produce seeds

    B)  the seeds are not viable

    C)   it helps in maintaining genetic purity

    D)  it becomes more juicy

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Sugarcane is propagated vegetatively to maintain its genetic purity. In this method a portion is separated from the body of plant and then it is grown independently. The adventitious roots are developed when the stem is put in moist soil. The fruit of sugarcane is caryopsis. The seeds are formed but the seed retain their viability for a very short time. The yields almost always declines slowely with successive vegetative propagation (i.e., the juice is declined).
