Indirect transfer of genetic material from one bacterium to another through a bacteriophage is called :

    A)  transformation

    B)  conjugation

    C)   translation

    D)  transduction

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Indirect transfer of genetic material from one bacterium to the other through bacteriophage is called transduction. Hershey and Chase (1952) demonstrated the transduction on bacteriophage which attacks on E. coli. The transformation was shown by Griffith (1928). Transformation involves transfer of a part of DNA from surrounding medium or dead bacteria to living bacteria to form the recombinant. Lederberg and Tatum (1946) discovered genetic recombination in bacteria through the process of conjugation. The conjugation results in the transfer of genetic material DNA from one bacteria to other through conjugation tube. The synthesis of protein from m-RNA is called translation. It is unidirectional process and takes place on ribosomes present on the surface of endoplasmic reticulum.
