When water enters in roots due to diffusion, it is termed as :

    A)  osmosis

    B)  passive absorption

    C)   active absorption

    D)  imbibition

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Diffusion is net movement of substances from area of its own higher concentration to area of lower concentration due to random transitional kinetic motion of particles. The entary of water in roots due to diffusion is termed as passive absorption. The force for passive water absorption originates in aerial parts of plant due to loss of water in transpiration. The spontaneous flow of solvent towards a solution across a semipermeable membrane is called osmosis i.e., in osmosis the solvent flow from high diffusion pressure to low diffusion pressure. The absorption of water by solid particles of an adsorbant without forming a solution is called imbibition. The solid substances or adsorbants are called imbibants whereas the liquid is called imbibate. Active water absorption is the absorption of water using energy (ATP). Living cells in active metabolic condition are essential for this.
