    A stress hormone is:

    A)  IAA

    B)  NAA

    C)   ABA

    D)  IBA

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Abscisic acid is also called stress hormone because the production of this hormone is stimulated by stress conditions (drought, water logging and other adverse condition). Abscisicacid function as a general growth inhibitor by counteracting other hormones (auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins). IAA (Indole 3-Acetic Acid) is a natural auxin. Tryptophan is the precursor for the synthesis of IAA. IBA (Indole Butyric Acid) and NAA (^-Naphthalene Acetic Acid) are synthetic auxins. The auxins are responsible for cell enlargement and apical dominence. Apical dominence is the phenomenon by which presence of apical bud does not allow the nearby lateral bud to grow.
