What are the products obtained when ammonia is reacted with excess chlorine?

    A) \[{{N}_{3}}\]and\[NC{{l}_{3}}\]

    B) \[{{N}_{2}}\]and\[HCl\]

    C)  \[{{N}_{3}}\]and\[N{{H}_{4}}Cl\]

    D) \[NC{{l}_{3}}\]and\[HCl\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

When ammonia reacts with excess of chlorine, nitrogen trichloride and\[HCl\]are obtained as main product. \[N{{H}_{3}}+\underset{(excess)}{\mathop{3C{{l}_{2}}}}\,\xrightarrow{{}}NC{{l}_{3}}+3HCl\] In the above reaction, if\[N{{H}_{3}}\]is in excess,\[N{{H}_{4}}Cl\]and\[{{N}_{2}}\]are the main products.
