When mercuric iodide is added to the aqueous solution of potassium iodide

    A)  freezing point is raised

    B)  freezing point is lowered

    C)  freezing point does not change

    D)  boiling point is raised

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Depression in freezing point is a colligative property ie, depends upon the number of particles. When mercuric iodide is added to aqueous solution of potassium iodide, a complex potassium tetraiodomercurate (II) is formed. \[Hg{{I}_{2}}+2KI\xrightarrow{{}}{{K}_{2}}[Hg{{I}_{4}}]\] Hence, number of particles decreases and freezing point increases.
