Progesterone is a steroid hormone secreted by corpus luteum under the influence of LH of anterior pituitary in the second half of menstrual cycle and hCG of placenta during pregnancy. During pregnancy it helps in attaching embryo to uterine wall, development of placenta, maintenance of pregnancy and growth of secretory alveoli in mammary glands. Progesterone checks ovulation.
