Directions : In the following question more than one of the answers given may be correct. Select the correct answer and mark it according to the code:

Genetic code consists of: (1) r-RNA                                             (2) adenine and guanine (3) lysosome (4) cytosine and uracil

    A)  1,2 and 3 are correct.

    B)  1 and 2 are correct.

    C)  2 and 4 are correct.

    D)  1 and 3 are correct.

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

plasma genes occur in plastids, mitochondria, plasmids and some cytoplasmic particles like Kappa particles, sigma particles etc. The process by which the information coded in RNA (m-RNA) is decoded into a polypeptide is one of the exciting discoveries of Biology. It is often referred to as deciphering the genetic code with only four biochemical letters (A, G, C, V) A one letter code could not unambiguously encode 20 amino acids. A two-letter code could encode only 4 x 4 = 16 amino acids and is still not enough. So a triplet code, based on three biochemical letters or nucleotide bases could make up to 4 4 x 4 = 64 codons. This is the minimal that will be required to code for 20 or so different amino acids.
