An atom of mass number A and atomic number Z emits successively an \[\alpha \]-particle and a \[\text{-}\]particle and \[\text{-}\]rays. The mass number and atomic number of the end product, will be:

    A)  A - 4, 7 - 1

    B)  A - 4, Z - 2

    C)         A - 1, Z - 4

    D)         A, Z + 1

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

After emission of an \[\alpha -\]particle, the mass number reduces by 4 unit and atomic number by 2 unit. \[\beta -\]emission cause 1 unit increase in atomic number, \[\gamma -\]emission cause no effect on mass number and atomic number. Thus, the reaction can be shown assuming the element \[_{\text{Z}}^{\text{A}}\text{X}\]as the parent nucleus. \[_{\text{Z}}^{\text{A}}\text{X}\xrightarrow{\alpha }_{\text{Z}}^{\text{A}}_{-\,2}^{-\,4}Y\xrightarrow{\beta }_{\text{Z}}^{\text{A}}_{-\,1}^{-\,4}M\xrightarrow{\gamma }_{\text{Z}}^{\text{A}}_{-\,1}^{-\,4}M\] Hence, atomic number and mass number of daughter nucleus are \[Z-1\]and \[A-4\] respectively.
