AMU Medical AMU Solved Paper-2009

  • question_answer
If \[p{{K}_{a}}\] of acetic acid and \[p{{K}_{b}}\] of ammonium hydroxide are 4.76 each. The pH of ammonium acetate is

    A)  7

    B)  less than 7

    C)  more than 7

    D)  zero

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Given, \[p{{K}_{a}}=4.76\] and \[p{{K}_{b}}=4.76\]pH of salt of weak acid (acetic acid) and weak base (ammonium hydroxide) is \[pH=7+\frac{1}{2}p{{K}_{a}}-\frac{1}{2}p{{K}_{b}}\]\[\Rightarrow pH=7+\frac{1}{2}\times 4.76-\frac{1}{2}\times 4.76=7\] So, the pH of the solution is 7.
