The standard reduction potentials for \[C{{u}^{2+}}/Cu\] and \[C{{u}^{2+}}/C{{u}^{+}}\] are 0.337 and 0.153V respectively. The standard electrode potential of \[C{{u}^{+}}/Cu\] half-cell is

    A)  0.184V

    B)  0.827V

    C)  0.521V

    D)  0.490V

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

                     \[\Delta G=-n\,F{{E}^{o}}\] For, \[C{{u}^{2+}}+2{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}Cu\,;\,\Delta G_{1}^{0}=-2\,F(0.337)\]... (i) \[C{{u}^{2+}}+{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}C{{u}^{+}}\,;\,\Delta G_{2}^{0}=-\,F(0.153)\]  ...(ii) Subtracting (ii) from (i)                 \[C{{u}^{+}}+{{e}^{-}}\xrightarrow{{}}Cu\]                 \[\Delta {{G}^{o}}=-0.674\,F+0.153\,F\]                 \[-nF{{E}^{o}}=-0.521\,F\] \[\because \] For (III) \[n=1,\,\,\therefore \,{{E}^{o}}=0.521\,\,V\].
