  • question_answer
The alcohol which easily reacts with cone. HCl is

    A)  \[C{{H}_{3}}-CHOH-C{{H}_{2}}-C{{H}_{3}}\]

    B)  \[{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{3}}-C-OH\]

    C)  \[C{{H}_{3}}-C{{H}_{2}}-C{{H}_{2}}-C{{H}_{2}}-OH\]

    D)  \[{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}-CH-C{{H}_{2}}OH\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Tertiary alcohol readily reacts with halogen acid. \[C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  C{{H}_{3}} \\  | \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  C{{H}_{3}} \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{{{C}_{{{3}^{o}}}}}}\,}}\,-OH\xrightarrow{{}}C{{H}_{3}}-\overset{\begin{smallmatrix}  C{{H}_{3}} \\  | \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  | \\  C{{H}_{3}}  \\  carbonium\text{ }ion \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{{{C}^{+}}}}\,}}\,+O{{H}^{-}}\] Presence of 3 alkyl group increases electron density on \[{{3}^{o}}\] carbon atom. Hence, ?OH group is easily removed. After removal of ?OH group \[{{3}^{o}}\] carbonium ion is formed which is most stable.
