In Halls process, the main reagent is mixed with

    A)  NaF

    B)  \[N{{a}_{3}}Al{{F}_{6}}\]

    C)  \[Al{{F}_{3}}\]

    D)  None of these

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Pure alumina is a bad conductor of electricity and the fusion temperature of pure alumina is about \[{{2000}^{o}}C\]. At this temperature, when the electrolysis is carried of fused mass, the metal formed vaporises as the boiling point of Al is \[{{1800}^{o}}C\]. To overcome this difficulty, \[N{{a}_{3}}Al{{F}_{6}}\] and \[Ca{{F}_{2}}\] are mixed with alumina.
