The smallest known agents of infectious disease are

    A)                  viruses

    B)  mycoplasma

    C)                  viroids

    D)  Actinomycetes

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Viroids are the smallest known disease causing agents. They are small, low molecular weight RNA particles. They lack proteinaceous capsid. These are single stranded circle, which due to internal base pairing assume a nearly double helical structure. Mycoplasma are unicelled,  prokaryotic non- flagellate organisms having no definite shape, hence called pleomorphic. Viruses are DNA or RNA containing protein particle. These are obligate parasite. These can reproduce only within the host cell.
