The most common indicator organism which represents polluted water is

    A)                  Salmonella typhi

    B)  E. coli

    C)                  Entamoeba histolydca

    D)  Vibrio cholera

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Due to addition of sewage and waste, oxygen ^levels are depleted, which are reflected in terms of BOD values of water. The number of microbes as Escherichia coli (bacterium) also increases tremendously and these also consume most of the oxygen. The number of bacteria as E. coli in unit volume of water is also taken (E. coli index) as a parameter of water pollution. BOD is the amount of oxygen required for biological oxidation by microbes in any unit volume of water. The test is done at \[{{20}^{o}}C\] for at least five days. BOD values generally approximates the amount of oxidisable organic matter, and is, therefore, used as a measure of degree of water pollution and waste level. Thus, mostly BOD value is proportional to the amount of organic waste present in water.
