    B)  haematin

    C)                  toxin

    D)  hypnotoxin

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Cnidocytes or stinging cells are found only in cnidarians. Each cnidocyte possesses a unique type of large and centrally located, sac like organelle called nematocyst. The oval or pyriform nematocyst is a complicated organelle. Its main saccular part is called capsule. It is filled with a poisonous fluid called hypnotoxin, which is a mixture of proteins and phenols. Nematocyst is a definite response of Hydra for offence, defence, food capture anchorage or locomotion. Penetrants or stenoteles are discharged upon preys suitable for food, the thread shoots out straight with such a force that it pierces into the body of prey and injects the capsular fluid (hypnotoxin) like a hypodermic needle. This paralyses and ultimately kills the prey. Haematin is red pigment of haemoglobin.
