Green-house effect is due to the increased concentration of

    A)                 \[C{{O}_{2}}\]

    B)  \[Ne\]

    C)                 \[S{{O}_{2}}\]

    D)  \[N{{O}_{2}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Under normal conditions (with normal \[C{{O}_{3}}\]concentration) the temperature at the surface of earth is maintained by the energy balance of sun rays that strike the planet and heat that is radiate back into space. Due to increase in \[C{{O}_{3}}\] concentration a thick layer of \[C{{O}_{2}}\] is formed which functions as glass panel of a green house that prevents the heat from being reradiated out. This is called green house effect. Thus, most heat is absorbed by \[C{{O}_{2}}\] layer and the temperature of earths atmosphere increases and called as global warming. \[S{{O}_{2}}\] and \[N{{O}_{2}}\] cause acid rain. These are produced mainly from combustion of fossil fuels, power plants, automobile exhausts etc. The oxides are oxidized into acids, which dissolve in water in the atmosphere and fall to the ground in the form of acid rain.
